Dave Wilson was raised in Cooma NSW during the building of the Snowy Mountains Scheme. As both neighbours (one of whom was well known Monaro angler, Aubury Hosking) tied their own flies, Dave naturally assumed that fly tying was a normal part of life. He was shocked to find upon moving to Sydney many years later that fly tying was not as popular as Cricket and Rugby league.

Like so many Sydney based tyers, Dave further developed interest and skill at Sydney's only fly tying school at Eastwood in Sydney's suburbs under the watchful eye of Bob Sayers and the late Don Thompson. Joining up with six ex students, Dave has tied flies with this group on a monthly basis for over thirty years.
Dave entered the 1997 inaugural Australian Fly Tying Championships. Not daring to compete against professionals, Dave entered the Advanced section, which he won. In 1998 Dave won the Masters Freshwater section. Photos of Dave's winning flies can be seen in the Flyfishers Annual, Volume 3. In 2004 Dave was the only Australian/NZ tyer to obtain top ten Diplomas in the Mustad Scandinavian World Open dominated by French, German, UK, Norwegian, Finnish, Argentinean and USA tyers.
An inaugural member of the Sydney Fly-Rodders Club, Dave continues to
promote tying and has led the Club Oberon Tie-In and tying workshops for
over a decade.
Focussed mainly on Trout flies, Dave continues to build on his 40 plus years
exposure to amateur tying with a passion for Australian materials and
designs.
